I titled this past Jacob’s Son Joseph Mary’s Husband, which is noted in the New Testament because there is another Jacob who has a son named Joseph in the Old Testament.
Joseph is not Jesus’ biological father that is why he is referred to as Mary’s husband instead of Jesus’s father. There had to be something worthy about Joseph for God to trust him to raise his son, although there is not much written about him in the bible. There were other males named Jacob, Joseph, etc.… at that time.
Joseph was probably still around raising Jesus until Jesus was mature enough, but when Jesus was around twelve years old, Joseph sort of disappeared from the bible. I credit that to the fact that back in those days it was always written about the fathers and their biological sons.
The four gospels were mostly about Jesus, and he was the son of God. So, the writers could not write in the way that writers of that time usually wrote, you know Joe begat Moe begat Doe begat Slow, etc… I guess the writers had no choice but to write Joseph out of the bible.
Now with Joseph out of the way, all of the gospels can be all focused on Jesus’s life on earth, which is the purpose of the gospels anyway. By trade, Joseph was a skilled carpenter so he probably earned a decent salary to care for his family.
God really knows how to pick a good man for the job. There are not many men who would marry a woman who got pregnant by someone else while he was dating her, knowing what the people were going to say about him. From this, you can tell that Joseph was a true believer and he really believe in God.
What would you do if you were dating a woman for about six months, and you have not had sex with her, and she became pregnant? If God did not talk to you and probably if God did talk to you, I think you would leave her because you would think she will be a unfit to be a wife.
There is not much said about Joseph’s first wife which he did have four biological sons with James, Joses, Simon, and Judas. Some people get this Joseph confused with the Joseph from the Old Testament who had two sons Ephraim and Manasseh with his wife Asenath.
Joseph’s first wife’s name was not mentioned either, but after she died, years later when Joseph was about eighty years old, he married Mary the future mother of Jesus. I am assuming Jesus’ half-brothers were a lot older than he was. Joseph had a brother named Cleopas, but there is not much written about him or their father Jacob, also there is not much written about Mary’s father Heli.
Unlike the Joseph of the Old Testament who father name was also Jacob which was later changed to Israel, his grandfather Isaac name is recorded, and his eleven brothers’ names are recorded Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin.
If you ever wondered why more was not written about Joseph of the New Testament, the purpose of the gospel was about the birth and life of Jesus, and not about Joseph. The reason Joseph named was mentioned is because he married Jesus’s mother, even though he married her before Jesus was born.
If Jesus would have just shown up on the scene without his parents, the scriptures could not have been fulfilled. Or if he would have been born to a single woman, he would have been considered an illegitimate child, and no one would have believed in him, although few people believed in him anyway.
Joseph loved Marry and all of his children including his stepson Jesus, and Jesus loved all of them, although at times he did not openly show it.
